Competition Information

The 3rd annual PCSC Dance Competition will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, from 7:00 PM – 12:00 AM at the Gastonia Conference Center. All competitors must be at least 18 years old to compete. Minors can perform as a showcase. This competition is open to all urban social dance communities that dance in the styles of 1) Detroit-Style Urban Ballroom 2) Chicago Steppin’ 3) Swing (DFW Swing-Out, East/West Coast Swing, Shag, Bop & Hand Dance).

 

The Jack & Jill and Kizomba competitions will take place on Friday, August 24, 2018, from 7:00 PM - 12:00 AM at the Gastonia Conference Center for contestants 18 years or older.

 

Couples can choose to participate in the following categories:

 

  • Ballroom Novice

  • Ballroom Experienced

  • Chicago Steppin’ Novice

  • Chicago Steppin’ Experienced

  • Swing All Levels

  • Silver Showstopper (Age 55+, All Levels, all dance styles)

  • Kizomba All Levels (Friday Night Competition)

  • Jack & Jill ($150 for winning duo) (Friday Night Competition)

 

To qualify for the Novice category:

  • Possess 3 years or less experience and/or never won a dance competition

Note: If you entered a dance competition in the past and did not win, you are eligible to enter the Novice category.

 

To qualify for the Experienced category:

  • It is at the duos' discretion as to whether they believe to possess an advanced skill level. There are no minimum requirements for years of dance experience. 

 

Registration Information

 

Participants may compete in multiple categories. For each dance performed, contestants must pay the registration fee and complete a registration form.

 

No audition is required. However, each duo must register in order to participate.

Registration fee is $80 per couple ($40 per individual) for all categories except Jack & Jill and Kizomba.

Jack & Jill registration fee is $15 per person to be paid in person Friday, August 24, 2018. 

Performance songs must be available digitally (mp3, mp4 etc.).

Contestants are responsible for responding to emails or phone contacts from the PCSC staff

 

Green Registration (no paper forms accepted)

A winner for each Saturday Night category will be selected by a panel of judges. Prizes include a trophy for the winning duos and $500. Payouts only occur if a minimum of 3 couples competes within a category. 

The Friday night Kizomba competition winner will be selected by a panel of Judges. Prizes include a medal and $300 for the winning duo. The winning duo for Jack & Jill include winning all of the entry fees.

 

PCSC Management has the discretion to make any changes to make the competition fair for all contestants.

 

Judgment Criteria

 

  • Appearance: Overall neatness; costumes allowed, but not required

  • Originality: Creative placement of combinations and visual animation of the dance

  • Technique: Sound fundamentals of the dance; control of balance and weight; hand connection; posture; timing (as it relates to the chosen dance style)

  • Choreography: Overall creativity

  • Overall Presentation: Overall visual and emotional connection with one another and the audience

* Contestants will have an opportunity to speak with the Executive Judge if there are any inquiries about their scoring.

 

Ballroom Rules

 

  • Performance time is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes, thirty seconds

  • No heats.  No more than one couple will perform at a time

  • Detroit Ballroom content must be presented throughout the dance

  • Lifts and aerials are allowed.

  • Couples are allowed a maximum of:

    • 2 breaks (shall not be longer than two 8-counts consecutively)

    • 3 dips (any move when the follower is below the leader's waist)

    • 2 drags (any moving of partner across the floor while in a leverage move or lean)

    • 2 leverage moves/leans (anytime couples are using each other’s weight as a means of supporting one another in a forward, side, or backward motion)

    • 2 drops (when a follower is below the leader's knees including splits)

    • 1 sit spin (when the follower is seated in a one leg spin and spirals upward to finish)

 

Chicago Steppin’ Rules

 

  • Performance time is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes, thirty seconds

  • Chicago Steppin’ basics must be presented throughout the dance

  • Lifts and aerials are allowed.

  • Couples are allowed a maximum of:

    • 3 dips (any move when the follower is below the leader's waist)

    • 2 drags (any moving of partner across the floor while in a leverage move or lean)

    • 2 leverage moves/leans (anytime couples are using each other’s weight as a means of supporting one another in a forward, side, or backward motion)

    • 2 drops (when a follower is below the leader's knees including splits)

 

Swing Rules

 

  • Performance time is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes, thirty seconds.

  • Swing basics must be presented throughout the dance

  • Lifts and aerials are allowed.

  • Couples are allowed a maximum of:

    • 2 dips (any move when the follower is below the leader's waist)

    • 2 drags (any moving of partner across the floor while in a leverage move or lean)

    • 2 leverage moves/leans (anytime couples are using each other’s weight as a means of supporting one another in a forward, side, or backward motion)

    • 2 drops (when a follower is below the leader's knees including splits)

 

Silver Showstopper Rules

 

  • Both partners must be age 55 or older

  • Performance time is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes, thirty seconds.

  • Lifts and aerials are allowed.

  • Any urban social dance allowed

  • Put on a show and have a great time doing it!

 

Kizomba Rules (Friday Night Competition)

  • Kizomba basics must be presented throughout the dance

  • Performance time is a minimum of 2 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes, thirty seconds.

  • Lifts and aerials are allowed.

  • Put on a show and have a great time doing it!

 

Jack & Jill Rules (Friday Night Competition)

 

  • Performance time is a minimum of 1.5 minutes and maximum of 2 minutes

  • No heats.  No more than one couple will perform at a time

  • Leaders and followers will be randomly matched

  • DJ will select the song

  • Enjoy and put on a show!
